Fabrics and Materials
Fabric
At Sailaal, we predominantly use natural fibers because they are breathable, cooling, durable, and biodegradable. This includes animal-based protein fibers like silk, and plant-based cellulose fibers such as cotton and hemp.
Organic Cotton: We only source GOTS certified organic cotton, the international gold standard of organic textiles in which every step of the supply chain meets strict environmental and social standards. Organic cotton uses less energy and water than conventional cotton. It is grown without GMO seeds or toxic chemicals such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, making it safe for the soil, farmer, and consumer.
Supima Cotton: A premium type of cotton grown exclusively in the United States. It is known for its extra-long staple fibers that are 50% longer than those of regular cotton, contributing to the fabric’s strength, softness, color retention, and durability. Although not organic, we only source Supima cotton that is certified by both Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Cradle-to-Cradle. The latter is a globally recognized standard for products that are safe, circular, and responsibly made.
For more information, please refer to our blog on Supima cotton, GOTS, Cradle-to-Cradle, and Oeko-Tex certifications.
Roica V550: Although we’re strict about not using synthetics, we wanted to incorporate a material that would add stretch. That is why you’ll see some of our Supima cottons blended with Roica V550, a Japanese-invented material with stretch properties. Although synthetic, it’s considered a more eco-friendly option because it partially degrades after its lifespan, unlike traditional elastane (which can take 50 - 200 years to decompose). The blended fabric is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Cradle-to-Cradle certified.
Hemp: We source our beautiful hemp blends from a GOTS certified company, guaranteeing their ethics and safety. Hemp comes from the Cannabis Sativa plant, which consumes little water and doesn’t typically require the use of fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. It contributes to healthy soil by replenishing essential nutrients, removing pollutants, and reducing erosion. The fabric comes from the plant’s bast, while other parts of the plant are used to make different products, resulting in zero-waste.
Silk: We only source 100% silk that is certified according to Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, one of the world’s most reliable certifications testing for chemicals and substances harmful to humans.
